So you have been on your natural hair journey for a while and now you are in search of some natural goodies for your hair. The only way you can 100% guarantee a product is all natural or has natural ingredients is if you make it yourself right? Naturals are known for using the kitchen cabinet/ fridge as their personal hair/beauty shop and why not? Those items have the right nutrients that are beneficial to our hair. Plus you could be saving some coins too. So let’s get into some of the homemade goodness we can be mixing ourselves!
I’m sure every natural has a tub of Shea butter sitting somewhere and wondering what to do with it. How about a multipurpose moisturiser for both your skin and hair? Shea butter is known for its excellent moisturising and healing properties plus its full of vitamin A and E. I mix mine with coconut, olive, castor oil and a few drops of spearmint essential oil for a great cream that I use of part of my L.O.C routine.
So you went to the supermarket and got Greek yoghurt but you realise you hate the taste, bin it? Oh no! Not unless you want all that protein in the bin! Greek yoghurt is an excellent source of protein. As a deep conditioner, it can help dry, brittle or shedding hair. Spoon however much you fancy and apply to your hair and cover with a cap. Let it sit for 30-45 minutes and wash as usual. For extra goodness, you can add a dash of coconut or olive oil. You can also use Greek yogurt as a face mask! Because of its probiotic enzymes, it is beneficial for those with acne issues. Just smooth the yogurt on and leave for 5-10 mins, rinse and apply for favourite moisturiser.
So we know we can use this to whiten teeth ( if you didn’t, just make a paste of baking soda and water, apply to teeth and leave for 3 minutes, rinse with water afterwards) but did you know you can use it in your hair too? It acts as an excellent alternative to clarify your hair and remove product build up. You can mix 2 tea spoons with water and use after co-washing then condition as normal or sprinkle a little bit on your shampoo.
You have to do a protein treatment but you forgot to order one from British Curlies! No worries! Be like muscle builders who swear by eggs as an excellent source of protein. You can mix one egg with your favourite conditioner for a light protein treatment. Or you can mix beaten eggs to your favourite shampoo for a strengthening shampoo.
An excellent product for your salads and your hair! To deep condition, apply some mayo and let it sit for 30 mins. Rinse as usual afterwards. For extra moisturising properties you can add some olive oil. My favourite is the mayo, egg and honey mixture which is very effective in moisturising my hair and for adding a shot of protein too.
Sugar, salt and oil scrub
For beautiful glowing skin, mix some brown sugar, salt and some coconut or olive oil. You can apply with your hands or exfoliating gloves in circular motions all over your body. The scrub will get rid of dead cells/skin for beautiful smooth skin! You can also you this as a lip scrub for smoother lipstick applications!
